HERITAGE MALL ATTEMPTS TO SET COOL KIDS READ RECORD OF TOTAL PARTICIPANTS READING ALOUD IN CELEBRATION OF WORLD LITERACY DAY

August 31, 2015 – Albany, OR.  Heritage Mall hosts its 1st Annual Cool Kids Read Event on September 12, 2015 from 11pm–12:30pm in celebration of the World Literacy Day, in partnership with Altrusa International of Albany, Get SMART, Albany Public Library, Literacy Council, R.E.A.D (Reading Education Assistance Dogs), and Readaloud.org. The event will be held at the Heritage Mall Center Court located at 1895 14th Avenue SE, Albany, OR 97322.

Heritage Mall continues to serve the community with family-oriented events throughout the year. The goal of this event is to encourage youth that reading is essential by engaging them in fun activities that promote the importance of literacy. Parental participation in this festivity is equally important, as they are the primary role models at home.

Some of the fun activities in this event will include: reading aloud, crafts, an appearance by the The Cat in The Hat, book walk, reading with the Chintimini Kennel Club, face painting, and puppet show by the Albany Public Library. Registered participants will receive double the chance to win a Kindle Fire.

Heritage Mall staff and attendees will read aloud a snippet from “What Pet Should I Get?” written by Dr. Seuss.  Heritage Mall hopes to set a reading aloud record from the community.

Participants are encouraged to register online at www.coolkidsread.splashthat.com and the first 50 participants will receive a free “sling-bag”. This event is free and open to the public.

In other words, they lack the basic reading and writing skills to manage daily living and employment tasks. In 1965, UNESCO declared September 8 as International Literacy Day. Since this proclamation, schools, organizations and communities around the world have united to promote awareness with the hope to one day eradicate this ongoing human rights violation. www.interanationalliteracyday.org.
