Dogs to walk runway at fashion show

Dogs from SafeHaven Humane Society in Albany will take to the fashion runway at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Maurice’s at Heritage Mall.

Models showing off the store’s fall collection will be accompanied by adoptable dogs from the shelter.

The goal is to raise support for animal shelters and find permanent homes for the four-legged models, said store manager Amy Ainslie.

“We hope shoppers who come to Maurice’s will feel even better knowing that we’re also doing our part to help local animal shelters,” she said.

Shoppers are asked to donate pet supplies or a monetary gift that will go to SafeHaven. As a thank-you, Maurice’s will give supporters a coupon for 20 percent off a regular-priced item.

Friends for Life charms for $5 can be purchased, with $2.50 from each sale going to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The proceeds will go to support ASPCA programs nationwide, Ainslie said.

The charms are available through Oct. 31 or while supplies last. They also are available online at www.maurices.com. Half of the charm can be worn by the pet and the other half by the owner.

There are a large number of dogs and cats of all ages available for adoption at SafeHaven, said shelter spokeswoman Jackie Saling.

This month, SafeHaven is offering a deal to those adopting a dog or cat. Anyone who donates an item on the shelter’s supply wish list will receive $25 off their new pet.

On the supply needs list are laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, paper towels, large garbage bags, copy paper, paper towels, Pine Sol, bleach, Simple Green, dish soap, non-clumping cat litter, scouring pads, small binder clips and paper cups.

SafeHaven is supported entirely by donations, adoption fees and fundraising events. Shelter hours are noon to 5 p.m. Saturday through Monday and noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The shelter is at 33071 Highway 34 in Albany.
